Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has completed the upgrade of the Jimna Springs Road Floodway over Umbiram Creek at Southbrook, delivered through Betterment funding as part of the broader 2022 Flood Recovery Program.
Council’s $11.8 million Betterment Program is part of the wider 2022 Flood Recovery Program and is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
TRC Construction and Maintenance (Infrastructure Services) portfolio spokesperson, Cr Carol Taylor, said the upgrade will enhance flood resilience while improving road access during rain events.
“TRC’s Construction and Maintenance (South) team has delivered the Region’s sixth Betterment project,” Cr Taylor said.
“Betterment projects are designed to enhance Council’s infrastructure by restoring assets to a more resilient standard.
“By upgrading the Jimna Springs Floodway we’re building back better.
“The floodway has been upgraded, including significant structural improvements to increase durability and reduce vulnerability to repeated flood damage.”
Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Kristy McBain, said the focus on delivering resilience projects was a key focus for all levels of government.
“I’d like to acknowledge the hard work Toowoomba Regional Council has done, not only for this project, but through its broader program, helping make communities in the Southern Toowoomba Region safer,” Minister McBain said.
“The Albanese Government’s focus is to ensure infrastructure damaged by the 2022 floods is restored and built back better, to withstand the increasingly frequent and intense severe weather events we’re likely to face in the future.”
State Member for Condamine Pat Weir said the floodway upgrade was crucial to local disaster resilience.
“Betterment is at the heart of the Crisafulli Government’s approach to disaster recovery, strengthening Queensland’s disaster response and recovery capabilities,” Mr Weir said.
“This upgrade will mean local infrastructure can better withstand the next disaster, and the community can bounce back quicker.”
“We are very grateful for the ongoing support and financial assistance provided for these projects by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the DRFA,” Cr Taylor said.
