The boldest ambitions of the Toowoomba Region’s high school students are being put to the test in The Mayor's Telstra Innovation Awards 2023.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said the awards were being conducted in collaboration with Telstra, the University of Southern Queensland, TAFE Queensland and Toowoomba & Surat Basin Enterprise.

“The competition challenges the brightest minds in our high school students studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) from years 9 to 12,” Mayor Antonio said.

“We are challenging students to display their most innovative projects by unlocking their problem-solving potential to take their big ideas to the next level.

“The judges are looking for the next innovative idea or a new and creative use of an existing concept or technology in any field, ranging from social media, gaming technology to robotics, health, agriculture, security, conservation, construction, energy, or recreation.

“The awards highlight the importance of studying STEM fields and how potential advances can benefit the Toowoomba Region and expand a knowledge-based economy.

“The program aims to nurture students’ existing knowledge and inspire them to be innovative and collaborative. It will encourage teamwork between students, giving them a chance to present their ideas and concepts to a wider community audience and recognise their efforts and achievements.

“The challenge will inspire and encourage the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and leaders who will help shape our Region’s future.”

The program is designed to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among entrants by connecting them with the Region’s business community and promoting camaraderie. Entrants will learn about available support channels and improve their experience and knowledge of entrepreneurship.

Students also will be offered incentives to take risks by making their own decisions to explore opportunities.

The Mayor's Telstra Innovation Awards 2023 is an exciting initiative that brings together different stakeholders to support and promote innovation among the Region’s young people.
