Road safety never takes a holiday and it starts with me.

That’s the simple and sobering message Toowoomba Regional Council and emergency services representatives are imploring residents to remember across Easter and the school holidays.

TRC representatives today (April 6, 2023) reinforced safe motoring messages along with senior officers from the Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service at Toowoomba’s Kitchener Street fire station.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said road users could not afford to relax nor ignore basic road rules at a busy time on the Region’s roads.

“Unfortunately, road crash figures indicate motorists are taking too many risks that endanger other road users and themselves,” Mayor Antonio said.

“Council and all emergency services are united in our efforts to remind motorists to observe road rules ensuring everyone can enjoy a safe and happy holiday or go about their daily business.”

Toowoomba Regional Council Infrastructure Services Committee chair Cr Carol Taylor said there is no excuse for taking risks on our roads.

Cr Taylor said all road users must remember to give their total attention to the road and surrounding conditions on every journey.

“There is no room for complacency. Please avoid taking risks behind the wheel as you not only endanger your own life, but the lives of your passengers, other motorists and road users,” Cr Taylor said.

“We have a collective and individual responsibility to be safe on our roads, whether pedestrians, cyclists, public transport passengers, motorcyclists or motorists.

“Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Anticipating what other road users might or might not do contributes to safer journeys.

“Council is committed to improving road safety through managing our road network and advocating for road safety education.

“I remind motorists to watch for changes to road conditions, especially as we continue our extensive flood recovery road works across the Region.”

Cr Taylor said Council was most grateful to all emergency services for their dedication to keeping the community safe.
