Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is supportive of the Queensland Government’s review to expand the type of containers that can be recycled via the Containers for Change program.
TRC Water and Waste Committee portfolio leader Cr Nancy Sommerfield said the move was a positive step to increase the volume of containers that can be recycled and redeemed for cash at participating outlets.
“Council is pleased to see an extension of the popular recycling program that will include glass wine and spirit bottles,” Cr Sommerfield said.
“We need to encourage residents to recycle resources like glass bottles to ensure we continue to divert these reusable items from our landfills.
“Council actively promotes the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling precious resources.
“Diverting recyclable material from landfill reduces operating costs and promotes further environmental benefits.
“Council is working to transition in line with the state government targets for 90% of our waste being reused and diverted from landfill by 2050.
“This initiative reinforces a circular economy where product streams can be recycled, repurposed or reused, for instance the use of glass in road construction.”
